An innovative design creating a sense of movement and lightness, creative director Vincent Van Duysen's latest armchair enters the canon of iconic contemporary seating.
“For Paula, we were inspired by modernist furniture such as the Barcelona armchair by Mies Van Der Rohe to make a new contribution to the lifestyle pieces we have been developing over the past several years with Molteni&C. We paid close attention to the details and proportions of this armchair: the transposition of a decisive silhouette balanced by the lightness of the metal structure and the ingenious system of leather straps defining the seat, backrest, and cushions.”
Vincent Van Duysen.
The key to Paula’s timelessness is its carefully considered proportions. With a cantilevered frame and suspended cushions, the armchair is designed to create a synthesis between the soft and inviting seat and the solid and robust frame.
Paula’s shape is defined by an innovative system of looping leather straps that attach the seat and backrest to the metal frame. Available in natural, tobacco, hazelnut, or mud green, the leather seat and backrest provide a warm contrast to the matte, burnished, or sand metal structure.
The matching ottoman was conceived as a visual continuation of the armchair. Its base is formed of the same pedestal feet in burnished or sand metal and its cushion is attached with the same system of looping leather straps. Both contemporary and elegant, Paula is a visually striking, beautifully crafted piece of furniture that combines modern design perspectives with luxurious comfort.
Vincent Van Duysen was born in 1962, in Lokeren, Belgium and graduated in architecture at the Higher Institute of Architecture Sint-Lucas, in Ghent. From 1986 to 1989 he worked in Milan and Brussels. He opened his own studio in Antwerp, in 1990 focusing on architecture and interior design. The relationship between interior design and architecture in his work is profound. Furnishings and accessories are designed with an architectural perspective that is not limited by form, but is expressed with a careful perception of interior space and its relationship to the exterior architecture. By interpreting architecture and redefining its proportions, Van Duysen creates objects of great purity and simplicity that still retain a concrete character and solid form.
